A documentary on celebrity rapper and music composer Honey Singh is taking over the streaming platform Netflix. The ‘Yo-Yo’ star has revealed various phases and aspects of his life in the documentary which traces his journey of struggles and many unseen and unheard stories of his life.
Leaving almost nothing, the hip-hop star has ‘bored’ it all with his stories of sudden disappearances, personal and professional life. However, he did not share details about his failed marriage with former wife Shalini Talwar.
Honey Singh’s ex-wife
The documentary tells a lot about the star rapper, but Singh’s fans are still unaware of his ex-wife Shalini Talwar. She was in Delhi in 1987 and done her schooling from Punjabi Bagh’s Guru Nanak Public School. She decided to pursue a modelling career and not everybody would have seen her on screen where she shared space with biggies like Abhishek Bachchan.
She starred in the 2004 film Run alongside Abhishek Bachchan and Bhumika Chawla.
Where they first met
Honey Singh first met Shalini Talwar in Delhi’s Karampura. Their meeting took place in a tuition class they used to attend commonly. Shalini was preparing for her B.Sc. at the time. Since then, they started knowing and dating each other after which the love birds decided to take their relationship to a next level.
They got married on January 23, 2011, in a Sikh traditional style at a farmhouse in Delhi. The marriage was attended by both their families.
Honey Singh kept hid his marriage for many years. But during a reality show, India’s Raw Star, where he was a judge, he introduced his wife to everyone.
Accusations of domestic abuse on Honey Singh
Nobody heard anything wrong in their marriage and their life was going smooth, atleast publicly, until Shalini filed a plea in Delhi’s Tis Hazari court against the singer-rapper in 2021. She made serious accusations of domestic violence and even told the court that her husband assaulted her even during their honeymoon. She even went on so far to accuse the pop star’s family of being rageful toward her while she was married. The singer-rapper rejected all accusations by his wife as ‘false and malicious.’
In his Instagram post in August 2021, Honey Singh replied back to the allegations and wrote, “I am deeply pained and distressed by the false and malicious allegations levied against me and my family by my companion/wife of 20 years, Mrs. Shalini Talwar. The allegations are severely odious.”
This did not lessen Singh’s pain, and he had to pay his ex-wife an alimony of Rs 1 crore, according to reports. The couple got divorced and parted ways two years after the allegations were levelled against Honey Singh, in 2023.
Later on, he confessed about neglecting his wife during the initial phase of his career that impacted their marriage. In an interview with Lallantop, Honey Singh said, “Our relationship wasn’t very good at that time. There was distance between us because I was travelling a lot. For the initial 9–10 months of our marriage, things were good. But then success and fame got to my head. When that happened, I neglected my family and had completely lost myself in money, fame, addiction, and women. I did terrible things. I almost left Shalini and forgot about them (family).”
Honey Singh’s documentary on Netflix is titled ‘bare-it-all’ which released on December 20.
