On January 20, Sealdah court sentenced R G Kar murder case accused Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment. Sanjay Roy was accused of the rape & murder of on-duty junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College & Hospital in August 2024. During the court hearing for sentencing, Roy’s lawyer referenced the reformative approach of the Indian sentencing system. The CBI prosecutor argued that this was a ‘rarest of rare’ case, especially as the doctor was working at a govt hospital. He called for the maximum punishment to be imposed to restore public trust in the justice system. Justice Anirban Das said that he does not believe the case to be ‘rarest of the rare’ and thus allotted life imprisonment to the convicted Roy. Relying on forensic evidence presented by CBI, the Court found Roy guilty under Sections 63, 64, and 103 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, with a potential death sentence or life imprisonment as punishment.
