But on Dec. 24, as drivers made their way to their Christmas Eve destinations, that was only the first link in a chain of events that would end in tragedy.
Around 8:30 p.m., Rosthern RCMP were called to the scene of a collision on Highway 7, west of town.

After the semis jackknifed, other drivers struggled to avoid the two unexpected hazards; multiple vehicles veered off the road in the process.
One SUV couldn’t get out of the way on time, and struck one of the semis.
The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the passenger, a 25-year-old woman from Calgary, died at the scene.
RCMP say her family has been notified, and local officers continue to investigate the crash with help from an RCMP collision reconstructionist.
Highway 7 was closed during the initial response to the crash, but has now re-opened.
